To determine the square yardage multiply the width and length, and divide by 9. Add 10-15 percent to allow for errors and irregularities.

Cut the tackless strips to size with heavy snips or a strip cutter. Nail the strips 1/2″ from the wall.  Tackless strips come in a variety of thicknesses, widths, and heights. Make sure you’re using the correct size. Cut away the padding along the inside edge of the strip.

The carpet will be easier to handle outside. If it’s possible, take the carpet outside, and notch the back on both sides at the appropriate length. You might want someone to help you. Take carpet back to the room. Cut away excess carpet. Where the carpet edges join, you’ll need to create a seam.

Attach the carpet to the tackless strips at one end of the room. Trim excess carpet with a wall trimmer. When all the carpet is in place, cut out the vent openings.
